Welcome to the Home Economics Department of Friends’ School, which is located on the ground floor of the main school building. There are two full-time members of teaching staff, Mrs Julia Tipping - the Head of Department, Mrs Lorraine Burch, and one part-time teacher Mrs Arlene Hannigan. There is also a technician, Mrs Susan Broddle.
 
Home Economics is taught to all pupils throughout Key stage 3. At G.C.S.E. and at AS and A level, Home Economics is an optional subject. At these levels the students follow the relevant C.C.E.A. Home Economics Specifications.
 
At G.C.S.E. the subject focuses on Diet and Health, and Consumer Awareness.
The AS and A2 courses encourage students to acquire, through both practical and theoretical contexts, an understanding of Diet and Health, Consumer Behaviour and Protection, as well as Food Safety.
 
The AS course encourages students to acquire an understanding of Nutrition for Optimal Health across the life span as well as the Priorities for Diet and Health, Mental and Sexual Health.
 
The A2 course encourages students to acquire an understanding of Consumer Issues such as Food Safety, Ethical Issues, Consumer Buying Behaviour, Labelling of Foods, Consumer Legislation, Methods of Redress and Financial Management.
 
The Department contributes towards the teaching of Key Skills in the Sixth Form and offers a General Studies option - Survival Cookery in Year 14.
The subject provides a basis for those seeking employment in a wide range of careers, such as Industry, Commerce, Education and the Health and Social Services.
