ACTION REQUIRED BY 31 MAY 2013

PAST & PRESENT MAGAZINE

Dear Fellow Old Scholar,

At the Annual General Meeting in May 2012, the issue of magazine funding was discussed again. A short PowerPoint presentation was not shown, due to the refusal of a computer to co-operate! It was suggested that a letter should be drawn up to cover the relevant points:

The Issue:

· The Magazine “costs” the Association about £2500 / year. As the School subsidise the cost to us, the real cost is about £3790.

· The costs have been reduced as far as possible by writing to Members and confirming that they wish to receive a copy (just over 20% opt not to). Committee Members also spend time and money delivering some copies by hand.

· Our appeal for a voluntary contribution brings in an impressive £1600 / year: about one-quarter of the members have made at least one donation. Put another way, three-quarters of the members have not responded to the appeal (yet!).

· There is an annual shortfall of at least £900 (thanks to the generosity of the School).

With this in mind, we have decided to try an “opt-in” for next year.

(1) If you wish to continue to receive the Magazine in its entirety by post each year, please

complete and return the Reply slip to Friends’ School Lisburn.

May we make it clear that, although we would like those who haven’t yet

made a voluntary contribution to do so if they wish to receive the magazine, we are

quite happy to send the magazine out to everyone who opts in regardless of any

contribution made. However, if we do NOT receive the Reply Slip or an emailed reply

by 31 May 2013, we will assume you do not wish to receive the Magazine.
