  • Welcome to Friends' School Lisburn
Friends’ is one of nine Quaker schools in Britain and Ireland and shares a common heritage with each of them. Although the School has grown and changed since its foundation in 1774, the Quaker belief in care for the individual and in the importance of the development of each person's potential remains central to our ethos and helps us to cater successfully for the different traditions in the Lisburn area. We hope you enjoy exploring our website and finding out more about what goes on in School.

Friends’ School Lisburn

Old Scholars’ Association

Friends’ School will be celebrating its 250h anniversary in 2024-25, and as we approach this important milestone in our history, we are keen to reconnect with as many of our Old Scholars as possible, not only to find out about what they have been doing, but also to rekindle friendships and to share recollections of schooldays. We hope that, over the next three years and beyond, we will have opportunities to invite you back into school and that you will take the opportunity to join with us in some of the events we will be organising. To help us plan ahead for our anniversary celebrations, we are keen to bring new members from across the generations on to the OSA committee, so please do get in touch if you would be interested in joining us.

FSL 250

As part of our 250th anniversary celebrations, we plan to publish a coffee table book which reflects the history of Friends’ School and the impact it has had on the Lisburn area, and we hope to include in it as many contributions from Old Scholars as possible. If you would like to submit an article about a special event or your experience of life of Friends’, or if you have any old photographs we could include, we would be delighted to hear from you. Ideally, articles should be 300-400 words in length and photographs should have a resolution of no less than 2 MB. Contributions can be emailed to  Joanne McGaffin at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.; alternatively, you can send us original copies of photographs which we will scan and return.  You may also like to submit news for the next edition of Past and Present, which can be emailed to the same address.

Visiting School

Old Scholars are very welcome to visit school, and if you contact us, we can arrange for you to be shown round by one of our Sixth Formers. While much has changed over the years, there is also much which is familiar to those who left many years ago. It has been a privilege to welcome back a number of year groups who have organised 40-year reunions, and it is striking how many memories are stirred as people have lingered in the assembly hall or in what used to be the school dormitories.

Archive Room

In line with Quaker tradition, records of the School’s rich history have been carefully preserved, and stored material represents a rich collection of information. Since 2005, the various records have been brought together into a central archive where they can be consulted more conveniently. The collection consists of pupil lists, school books, annual reports, curriculum matters, magazines, photographs, memorabilia and a collection of ancient books withdrawn from everyday use in the library.  Together they provide a valuable picture of School life over the past centuries and are being constantly supplemented by the addition of current items of future historical interest.  The initial work of collecting and cataloguing the material was done by former Headmaster, Arthur Chapman; however, if you feel you could assist in the task of continuing to make available to all the fascinating story of life at FSL since the 18th century,  please contact the Secretary of the Old Scholars’ Association, Maxine Boyd at This email address is being protected from spambots. The Archive Room is open to visit by arranging an appointment during term time either by contacting School on 028 92 662156 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
