FSL Hockey – Prior Shield Report
Following on from the successful tour to Vancouver in July, Friends’ School Boys’ Hockey Club has had an impressive start to the new season. In November, the 1st XI narrowly missed out on a place in the final of the McCullough Cup, losing to Wallace High School 4–2 in a highly-competitive match which was forced into extra time at 2–2. The 2nd XI have shown a great run of form, reaching the final of the Prior Shield, along the way beating teams including Campbell College and Portadown College 1st XI.

On the 8th December, Friends’ School 2nd XI faced an extremely skilful Banbridge Academy side, in the final of the Prior Shield at Lisnagarvey. After losing to Banbridge earlier in the season, the 2nd XI were out to revenge this defeat.

Banbridge were first to hit the scoreboard, taking a 2- 0 lead up to half-time. Friends’ returned after the half showing eagerness and determination. After beating two players, David Cumins drove into the circle and with a “cracking” reverse shot put Friends’ back in contention. With five minutes to go, Banbridge capitalised on a well taken short-corner, taking a 3–1 lead. However, Friends’ had by no means given up and in the final minute, Jordan McCready’s shot on goal brought the score to 3–2. Unfortunately, the umpire blew the final whistle seconds later and Friends’ hopes of a victory against Banbridge were set aside, for the time being anyway! Friends’ can take some heart from their fighting spirit and a 3–2 result against Banbridge is very respectable.

We eagerly await the start of competitions for all boys’ hockey teams after Christmas and aim to build on the success of the senior teams so far this season.
