 Ulster Youth Orchestra

Victoria Coome, a Year 13 pupil at Friends’ School, has won a place in the Ulster Youth Orchestra. Victoria, who also plays the cello in the Friends’ School orchestra, writes:

The award winning Ulster Youth Orchestra (UYO) offers young musicians from Northern Ireland the opportunity to work with a professional conductor and a team of tutors made up of some of the UK’s top orchestral and studio musicians. Places in the UYO are auditioned for annually, usually before Christmas. Two days before Christmas, I auditioned and, around a month later, I received a letter informing me that I had been successful

The UYO also offer a chamber orchestra course at Easter for players (this year, 39 players) who have been selected on the basis of their audition marks and the requirements of the proposed repertoire. Ihave also been chosen for this course, which involves a residential stay in Enniskillen at Easter, with concerts in Enniskillen and Newtownabbey.

The full UYO does a ten day residential course in August, with concerts at the Guild Hall in Derry and at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.
