On Friday 5 and Friday 12 February, Year 8 pupils in Friends’ School had a visit from Sarah McNeilly from the NSPCC who treated them to a thirty minute Hip Hop dance session to raise money for the charity through participation in a dance activity. Always keen to get fit and healthy, the Year 8s strutted their stuff to a varied selection of music, the favourite for many being Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas. These dance sessions were a fun follow-up to a January awareness raising Learning for Life and Work presentation delivered to all pupils in Year 8 by the NSPCC, during which pupils learned about the work of the organisation and the services provided to help children in need.
Chloe Gilkinson from Year 8 really enjoyed Sarah’s visit.
“It was a great event. Everyone enjoyed it, even those who didn’t like the thought of it at first or were embarrassed to be dancing in front of a group of friends! The purpose was to raise money for a worthwhile cause and with our money we will be able to help save more children’s lives and stop bullying.”
Naomi Lloyd also had a great day.
“Sarah started us off with a two minute warm-up before teaching us a few basic dance steps. We couldn’t wait!! As the session moved on, the moves got harder and faster and even if some of us couldn’t keep up with the moves, it was great fun!! After all that activity, at the end, Sarah put on some relaxing music to allow us to stretch and cool down. It was great and to think that we weren’t just doing it for fun but to help other people made it even more special.”
Pupils will be gathering in their sponsor monies over the half term holiday and Michelle Laverty from the NSPCC will come into School to receive a Friends’ School donation to the NSPCC.
As Year 8 pupils themselves agreed, Hip Hop proved to be a fun activity with a very valuable outcome.
