Friends’ School Young Environmentalists Group create a Biodiversity trail.
A group of Year 10 pupils are completing a project to encourage an appreciation of biodiversity and the advantages of native species to our local environment. The Group made a biodiversity trail in the school grounds which included a newly planted herb garden and vegetable patch. Other features of the trail include native and non native trees and the wildlife garden. Bird boxes made by the pupils were attached to trees around the grounds along with swift boxes and bat boxes. Pupils taking part in the trail will take bark rubbings, sow seeds and also participate in pond dipping. They will learn about native species and the wide diversity of plants and animals in our local area. The project “Spring into Action!“ will be entered in the Young Environmentalists Awards 2010 competition organised by ECO – UNESCO. The project is building on a successful project in school named, “It’s a Bugs Life” which won the Junior Biodiversity section of the Eco Unesco competition in 2009.
