On Saturday Friends’ athletes competed in sweltering conditions at the Ulster Schools’ Championships. The athletes who qualified through the District Championship included two girls’ relay teams, Peter Simpson, Sarah Coll, Chloe McCluskey, Erin Carruthers and Afton Fitzhenry and all of these pupils are to be congratulated on their performances.
Caragh Milligan qualified for the Junior Girls’ 200m final and also finished 4th with a personal best time in the 800m, just missing out on qualification for the Irish Championships in two weeks time.
However the following pupils did qualify for the Irish Championships after outstanding displays.
Katie Conn finished 2nd in the Junior Girls 1500m. Claire McKeag finished 3rd in Intermediate Girls Long Jump and 2nd in the Triple Jump. Ben Maze who only decided to concentrate on athletics less than a year ago but who trained very hard all winter was rewarded with the Senior Boys 400m title in a personal best time, and finally - the athlete of the meeting was Chloe Boomer who convincingly won both the 100m and 200m Intermediate titles, making it seven in total over the last 5 years.
