Girls' Badminton

Seven teams were entered in league and cup competitions-year 8, minor (years 9 & 10), junior (years 11 & 12) and senior (years 13 & 14). The minor and junior teams competed in division 1 of the league with the seniors playing in division 2.

The year 8 team- Laura Bell, Isabella Connor, Alana Jiadani, Katie Reid and Kate Callaghan, got the season off to a great start by winning the Ulster league. This competition was held at Friends in December. The girls had convincing wins in all of their matches beating Banbridge, Bloomfield, Hunter House, Wallace and Coleraine.

As a result of this great performance Friends’ were seeded one in the cup. The semi-final match was away to Coleraine with the team wasting no time notching up a 5-1 victory, progressing them to the Ulster Final. In the final the team were drawn against Hunter House and the team put in a great performance winning 6-0 and not even losing a set.

This was a great season for the year 8 team who show much promise for the future.

Laura Bell is a very talented player for her age. She was chosen to represent Ulster under 15 at the interpros, in which the team finished runners up.

The minor league and cup squad- Lucy Mathers, Lucy Xu, Sara Bamford, Lois Au and Sophia Hortiguela had mixed fortunes. They lost to Royal and Prior A team 4-2, but then achieved a convincing 6-0 win over Hunter House and wins over Royal and Prior B team and Coleraine.

Friends qualified in second place for the Ulster finals but unfortunately were defeated by a very strong Royal and Prior side.

In the cup the girls fought hard and played some good badminton before losing 4-2 to Wallace.

Lucy Xu continues to perform at a high level and she was chosen to represent Ulster under 15 at the interpros, in which the team finished runners up.

The Junior squad consisted of league team- Bethany Au, Ellie Bamford, Eloise Bryans, Ella Agnew, Cara Jeffrey and Emily McMurtry were unlucky in the league, they had convincing 6-0 victories against Royal & Prior and Bloomfield however lost narrowly to Coleraine Grammar.

The junior cup team disappointingly only had to play one match to reach the final. The girls’ defeated Royal and Prior 6-0.

In the Ulster cup final, the girls faced a very strong Hunter House side but despite their best efforts they lost 6-0.

The senior Squad-Rachael Murphy, Rachel Morrison, Olivia Agnew, Olivia Reid, A McCrory and H Waring played socially in division 2, some of the girls enjoying their last year of badminton at school. They lost 5-1 to Bloomfield,, then enjoyed a 4-2 win against Down High and then drew 3-3 with Sullivan and Strathearn but in both games having the better points difference.

In the Champion of Champions tournament held at Lisburn Racquets Club in November, Senior girl Hannah Waring played in three closely contested group games but did not make the semi-final. Bethany Au represented the Junior girls won through to the semi-finals where she lost narrowly. Lucy Mathers represented the Minor girls won through to the finals where she lost narrowly.

Full colours for Rachel Morrison

Half School Honours for Olivia Reid and Olivia Agnew.
