Department

Government & Politics

We are one of the fastest growing subjects in school and aim to provide pupils with the tools to understand the rapidly changing political sphere around them.

Pupils at Friends’ study a mixture of Northern Irish, British, and global politics in a varied syllabus that facilitates debate, analyses decisions, and separates fact from fiction. Our goal is to equip pupils to make informed choices in an increasingly complex world.

Curriculum

AS Politics involves a study of Northern Irish and British Politics, while A2 includes a UK-US comparative study and a module on Political Power.

Politics at Friends’ plays a key role in our Shared Education programme with the Politics in Action initiative.

Local politicians and news broadcasters regularly visit the school, providing excellent opportunities to interview, question and scrutinise. Our students at A-Level apply to many universities across the UK and Ireland to study courses in politics, law, international relations and many others, and pursue successful careers as solicitors, barristers, local politicians, journalists, museum curators and researchers, among many others.
