Modern Languages

We strive to challenge and enthuse pupils through effective teaching in a vibrant learning environment.

We emphasise the importance of communication, fostering an appreciation for diverse cultures. By developing linguistic ability, we prepare pupils to engage confidently and competently in a globalised world, enhancing their employability and sense of adventure.

Curriculum

At KS3, pupils learn French in Year 8, before adding either German or Spanish in Years 9 and 10.

Learning a language involves excitement and challenge as pupils navigate pronunciation and sentence structures, to become confident communicators. A strong “have a go” attitude is encouraged.

All pupils choose at least one language at GCSE. Building on the foundations acquired at KS3, pupils develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to become proficient in both verbal and written communication, acquiring a diverse vocabulary that allows them to handle various situations.

Pupils extend their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and aim for mastery of the language, speaking with fluency and writing with accuracy and complexity. Themes such as well-being, new technologies and family life are explored, as well as global issues such as immigration, equality and climate change.

Studying languages provides opportunities for employment both locally and internationally, thanks to the range of transferable skills acquired. Our results are consistently above the NI grammar school average and many of our pupils continue with language learning at university.

We offer a variety of extra-curricular activities to enhance learning. Regular trips to Nice, Salamanca and Weinstadt allow pupils to apply language skills in an authentic setting. Hosted by local families, they experience local culture. Our Sixth Form Language Ambassadors lead cultural events, including a Food Fest, a French Breakfast, a German Spelling Bee, and a Junior Languages Club. Each September, we celebrate European Day of Languages and share the message with our school community that learning a language is an essential skill. Pupils lead assemblies and run taster sessions in their native language. As part of General Studies, our pupils prepare and deliver weekly language lessons to inspire young minds.
