"Digital Ninja" Wayne Denner visits FSL

Online guru Wayne Denner visits FSL

FSL will host renowned "Digital Ninja" Wayne Denner on Thursday 26th November at 7:30pm to talk to parents on how they might support their child and keep them safe online.

In this motivational and insightful talks, Wayne covers areas such as protecting your online reputation, cyberbullying and making positive use of social media. He also gives advice to parents who can often feel powerless and unable to monitor or control their child’s use of digital media.

Digital media use at home, in other people’s homes and outside generally provides the potential risk of misuse and danger. Proper filters need to be in place and we all need to understand the key principles of staying safe online.

We teach pupils in School about online safety as part of our safeguarding and anti-bullying guidelines. We also inform all pupils about our Safe Use of the Internet Policy and the PSNI deliver whole year group presentations about personal protection online as well as meeting with pupils on a one-to-one basis in response to particular incidents.

In that way, pupils can be encouraged, from an early age, to develop protective habits when using the Internet and also to look after each other appropriately when engaging in online communication.

One of the key messages, reinforced in School, is special care in giving out personal information online and the potential danger in communicating with people who are, in fact, not who they say they are.

As a school we deal with many situations in which parents have sought advice as to how to deal with concerns that they have or respond to situations that have arisen and we hope that this evening will be instructive and valuable as we work together to keep our young people safe online.

We hope that you will be able to attend this pastoral presentation, as teaching children proper procedures for online safety must be reinforced continually at home and in School; and developing parents’ and teachers’ understanding of how to do so is therefore very important.

We look forward to meeting with you on 26 November.
